Well Woman Clinic
We have recently introduced a contraception clinic on Tuesday
afternoons called the ‘Women’s health clinic’ This is run by Dr. Eve Thacker and Dr. Sarah Aulds. Appointments regarding contraception can be booked in any appointment (see guidance below), but you may find it quicker and easier to book your appointment within this clinic – just let reception know you wish to do so.
General contraceptive advice
All the GPs are trained to discuss all forms of contraception, although if you
are specifically interested in the contraceptive Implants or IUDs (coils) we
recommend booking with Dr. Thacker, Dr Aulds, Dr Seyfollahi, Dr Otty, or Dr
Nicholson as they are trained to fit them (please see below for further information). We have specially trained family planning nurses who can be seen if you have already been started on a pill or injection and are not having any problems. They can also help with sexual health screening and smear tests. Free condoms are available on request from the GPs or nurses.
Contraceptive pills, patches, rings and injections (Depo)
All GPs are able to prescribe these and administer the contraceptive
injection. If you have been using these for several months or years and have no
problems, you can also book to see the nurse for continuing with these forms of contraception.
If you would like a contraceptive implant inserted or removed, you will need to
speak to a GP first, and it would be best to do that with a GP who inserts and
removes them (Dr. Thacker, Dr. Aulds, Dr. Seyfollahi, Dr. Nicholson, Dr. Otty).
You can either book a face-to-face appointment, or a telephone appointment. The
GP will discuss what’s involved and will arrange an appointment at a later
date to insert or remove. Feel free to book an appointment to discuss even if
you are not completely sure of your choice.
IUD and IUS (‘Coils’ ‘Mirena’)
If you would like an IUD inserted, you will need to speak to a GP first and it
would be best to do that with a GP who inserts them (Dr. Thacker, Dr. Aulds, Dr.
Seyfollahi, Dr. Nicholson, Dr. Otty). We recommend booking a face-to-face
appointment for this. The doctor will discuss what’s involved and will arrange an
appointment at a later date to insert it if you wish to do so.
Feel free to book anappointment to discuss even if you are not completely sure of your choice.
If you wish to have an IUD or IUS removed, you can book any appointment with
the above GPs to do so without a prior appointment. *Please be aware if you do
not wish to become pregnant you should not have unprotected sex seven days
before it is removed.*
We recommend that most women have a smear every three years. These can be done by any GP or by the specially trained practice nurses in their appointments.
